How to Teach Your Puppy to Walk On the Leash
If you haven't already gotten one, you will need a loose fitting collar for your puppy, a leash and a nice squeak toy which you can use to command your puppy's attention. Make sure he or she is interested in playing with the toy by showing it to her and talking in a nice, friendly way. Once he or she is interested, get your puppy's attention by tossing a stick and making him or her look in that direction or something similar. Then, squeak the toy to see if the puppy is still excited about playing. If so, it's the perfect time to start training.
Begin by holding the puppy's leash on the left side, along with the squeaky toy. When you're ready, say loudly but in a nice, friendly tone, "Let's go!" As you move to the left, your dog should follow you. Either he or she will follow because you've got their attention or the squeak toy has their attention. With a puppy, it's important to only work for a few steps in either direction. There are two reasons for this. The first is that puppies have very short attentions spans and can tire out quickly and the second is because if you try to keep him or her walking for too long, they will get bored and stop watching the toy.
As you continue this exercise often, you will be able to take the squeak toy out of the equation so that your dog will follow you and listen to the "Let's go" command without the need for that distraction.
