Potty Training Tips for Yorkies
Now while it's a fact that Yorkies may make smaller messes but the size of the mess doesn't really affect the amount you are going to spend on cleaning up after your pup.
Size does however play an important factor when it comes to the size of a dog's bladder - the smaller the dog, the smaller the bladder. Dogs with small bladders will need to use the potty more frequently and won't be able to hold it in as long as big dogs.
Living in an apartment or home without a big yard is no problem for the Yorkshire Terrier. These pets only need a small space to do their business which means that a flowerbed can work wonders.
Lots of people poke fun at Yorkies in sweaters but in reality they help to keep the dog warm during the cold winter months. The dramatic change between the warmth of the house to the cold or bad weather outside is hard on a Yorkie's body.
The cold can be very distracting for a dog that needs to use the potty and could make them want to run back inside. As soon as they make it back into the warmth of your home the urge to go will come right back and the pup will likely go on the floor. This transition is made much easier when the dog has a nice warm sweater on for extreme cold weather.
Some Yorkies will refuse to go out in bad weather unless they see you have a sweater for them to wear. This can be during the winter or even when it's raining.
There are ways to plan around this. You may want to lay down some paper in a box and keep it in the garage as a backup potty plan during bad weather. This should only be used for short amounts of time so that your dog still knows it needs to use the potty in the yard.
Be careful when you take your Yorkshire Terrier outdoors in your yard or at the park, watch where he walks. You want to keep your dog away from sniffing tall grass or bushes where your dog can easily become snake prey.
Yorkie owners need to remember to be courteous to their neighbors. Just because your dog's feces is small does not mean your neighbor will not mind if it is laying in their yard. Clean up after your dog!
This is also true when it comes to tracking dog poop in the house on your shoes. You won't notice it until it's all over your carpet and the same goes for your neighbors. Be responsible and clean up after your pup.
Housetraining works just the same for large dogs as it does for small ones like Yorkies. You can start with crate training and work to establish a routine for potty breaks.
Many little dogs like Yorkies are spoiled because they constantly sit in their owner's lap. This is where your positive reinforcement, praise and affection can come in handy for potty training. Good luck -- you too can have a perfectly housetrained Yorkshire Terrier!
