Taking Care of Your Dog's Teeth

Good care for your dog's teeth can be a very important part of keeping your dog healthy and alive. Although it may not seem important, dogs can often have the same dental problems that people do.
When plaque is left on the dog's teeth, it can cause gum disease and even loss of teeth. When dogs are born, they have no teeth but grow their teeth in. These teeth usually come in around the first two or three weeks.

Keeping your dogs teeth clean can be a real challenge. The first thing you should do is take your dog to an Austin veterinarian or one nearest you to have the dogs teeth cleaned and all the buildup on the teeth taken care of. This is just the first step of making sure you have a healthy mouth for your dog. The second step is to try and clean your dog's teeth. Although this doesn't sound like something that you would normally do, it might actually be helpful for the puppy. All you will need to do is to take an old toothbrush and brush over the dogs teeth. There is no need for toothpaste but if you would like to add a little for taste this wouldn't hurt. They also have made different kinds of toothpastes specifically made for dogs. You can buy some of the puppy toothpaste and use it at least once a week on your puppy. Gently run the toothbrush over the dog's teeth just like you would normally do for yourself.

The last thing you need to do is get your dog a bone. Some people tend to think that this is not the best option for dogs because the bones can splinter and cause choking in the dog. I definitely recommend a raw bone if you are going to use one at all. A raw bone is softer, therefore it would not splinter which would be safer for your dog. Another thing to remember would be that a raw bone contains calcium that can be very healthy for your dog. Be aware that this type of bone can bring a big mess. If you plan on giving your dog this type of bone, it would be a wise choice to let the puppy chew up the bone outside to prevent the mess.

If you are in need of a good vet, contact the Austin Veterinarian Clinic.
